One day, much to the horror of my family, I found myself bored and armed with a packet of googly eyes. Monster googly eyes to be precise in all sorts of colours.

As I wondered about the house making weird things weirder. I wondered if I could incorporate googly eyes into my work without it being just weird. For it to make sense within the drawing. To not be cheap and gimmicky but be quietly unsettling. Could the googly eye be placed with a delicate touch
The answer is yes.

It didn’t happen quickly I had to shuffle through stacks of drawings, sliding the jangly eyes about the page.
The piece above was where I decided to stop. I feel the eye displaces the face without dominating the artwork here. I feel, I hope.
I have only used this technique once and am happy to keep it that way for now, to do more definitely would feel like a gimmick.
Sometimes you want to seek and create pure human expression in a piece. Other times, you just want to seek if googly eyes could be useful beyond its usual framing of plain just being weird.
