Sorting messes

Today’s Desk looks a lot cleaner then it did yesterday and the day before.

I decided to sort my pens and pencils, this time taking the new approach of sorting them by colour.

As I sort and test the tools of my trade I build a drawing by trialling the pens and new textures as l go. The approach to my work I often take is to harness chaos and accident – to instinctually just grab things unthinkingly and draw with them. To rip and tear and dance with happenstance in search of new associations. This approach means there is rarely a mistake and it provides constraints through the previous marks now on the page. It creates surprise and the challenge of pulling it all together.

It has served me well and I still enjoy it. But maybe it’s time to shift to a more deliberate approach and I am wondering if sorting my tools by colour will make my choices more intentional.

When i get to a point near the finish line my choices do get more intentional as the challenge to pull it together relies on thoughful decision making. I don’t love this finished piece below, but others do, and both are ok because it served its purpose of holding my hand to a sorted space. Making art is good at doing that – holding our hands until we reach a sorted space. Inside and out.
