Today’s Desk

Today’s desk looked like this. These pieces are destined to either fill the packages I send or to be popped around Melbourne as free art to take home. The art will have a qr code on the back to lead them here. And i am doing it to build an audience, spread some cheer and because it makes me feel good inside.

Giving away art is political – disconnecting money from art (as if a price tag gives it value), is, I am told, revolutionary and to some – crass. In fact, I was amazed that so many people were vehemently opposed to the idea, that I was cheapening my art and art in general. Whatever dudes the value here is just offering something creative to the world and someone enjoying it. Thats what priceless should mean.

I deeply admire German printmaker Kathe Kollwitz who used printmaking because it was easy to make lots of pieces and therefore have them cheaply available. Her protest art unified and shone a light on the nations grief over their lost sons. Lost to Hitler’s war.

My free little art project doesn’t tread that terrain instead it focuses on surprise, lightness, deeper inspection and the joy of getting a quality product for free.

Because folks, look around, that just doesn’t happen much any more
